SEOUL, June 22 (Korea Bizwire) — In a bid to bolster its global R&D capabilities, South Korea’s LG Energy Solution held its first-ever European edition of the Battery Tech Conference (BTC) this week in Frankfurt, Germany, drawing top science and engineering talent from across the continent.
The BTC, LG Energy Solution’s flagship global recruitment initiative, aims to attract world-class researchers in battery innovation. While the company has hosted similar events in South Korea and the United States, this marked its inaugural BTC event on European soil — a region known for its leadership in materials science and advanced energy research.
“European universities are at the forefront of battery and materials engineering,” said the company in a statement. “The global talent recruited through this event will serve as a vital foundation for strengthening our leadership in next-generation battery technology.”
About 25 master’s and doctoral candidates selected from institutions such as Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, ETH Zurich, University College London, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne participated in the two-day event.
Attendees were given an in-depth look into LG Energy Solution’s R&D operations, career development programs, and long-term strategic vision.
CEO Kim Dong-myung, along with CTO Jeeyoung Kim, Chief Digital Officer Jin-kyu Lee, and Chief Human Resources Officer Kisoo Kim, led the company’s executive delegation.
In a keynote session titled CEO Career Story, Kim, a Ph.D. in materials engineering, shared his own trajectory from researcher to business leader, underscoring the potential for growth in science-driven careers.
Participants also presented their research through poster sessions and technical briefings, creating an open forum to discuss the latest trends in battery science.
The initiative comes amid growing competition for advanced tech talent in both the U.S. and Europe, especially under the renewed global focus on clean energy. LG Energy Solution, which has ramped up overseas operations and investment under the Lee Jae-myung administration, views strategic recruitment as essential to maintaining its edge in the battery sector.
“We are committed to intensifying efforts to secure top global talent through BTC events in the U.S., Europe, and beyond,” said an LG Energy Solution spokesperson. “We will continue investing in R&D and next-generation technologies, while also supporting ambitious young researchers who drive innovation and growth.”
