SO THE RAIN HAS STOPPED FOR A LITTLE BIT, BUT IT’S BEEN A PRETTY WET EVENING HERE AT MICHAUX STATE FOREST. BUT IT HASN’T STOPPED CREWS FROM WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO STOP TWO FIRES THAT HAS BURNED OVER 1300 ACRES OF LAND. THE FIRST FIRE STARTED AROUND 5 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY IN THE AREA OF SHIPPENSBURG AND BALTIMORE ROADS IN SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES, THAT FIRE HAS NOW GROWN TO 1150 ACRES. THE SECOND FIRE, WHICH STARTED ON THURSDAY IN THE RIDGE AND COLD SPRINGS ROAD AREA AROUND 140 IN THE AFTERNOON, HAS NOW AFFECTED ABOUT 200 ACRES OF LAND. NOW, ACCORDING TO DCNR. WHEN YOU TAKE A LOOK AT IMPROVEMENTS TODAY, THE OVERCAST CONDITIONS REALLY HELPED KEEP A HANDLE ON THINGS. THEY SAY THAT THE NOTICEABLE DROP IN TEMPERATURE ALSO REALLY HELPS THE FIRES DIE DOWN. More than 2,700 acres scorched | Michaux State Forest fires burn in Pennsylvania
Two wildfires in Pennsylvania's Michaux State Forest in Cumberland County have scorched more than 2,700 acres, but crews "did a lot of good work" Friday and got some help from the weather, according to the state Bureau of Forestry. The two fires are being called the Thompson Hollow Fire and the Hammonds Rock Fire." weather was drastically different. We've had lower temperatures, higher relative humidity. All in all, it's been a good day in terms of firefighting," Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources spokesperson Josh Thompson said. "The weather sort of moderated the growth of the fire and the intensity of the fire. It helped fire crews to get out there and get a lot of work done with the fire intensity down."Thompson said crews were able to get a lot of control lines in place."That's how we fight fire. We find a hard place where we can stop it, and then we work to contain it from there," he said.Firefighters also did some backfiring operations."What that does is that burns fuel out ahead of the fire. So, once the fire gets there, it stops progression, and so it doesn't challenge the line," he said.He said crews will work around the clock until they're confident the fire isn't going to go anywhere. He also added that just because there is containment doesn't mean the fire is completely out."A message I want to give to people is especially with fires this large, even once we get containment around the outside of the fire, what containment means is not only are the lines secure, but, you know, 100 feet or 200 feet interior from the lines is good and secure, but there's many acres interior that will continue to smolder for days or weeks, depending on when we get a lot of rain," he saidHe also asked people to be aware of road closures."We have a lot of firefighters on those roads, a lot of equipment and all hours of the day and night, so we do ask people to be respectful of those road closures. That way we can protect the firefighters and protect the public as well. Hopefully, they won't be closed for too terribly long. But in the meantime, it is for everyone's safety that we keep the roads, those couple roads closed," he said.Video below: DCNR provides Friday evening updateMichaux State Forest wildfiresThe Thompson Hollow Fire started first, around 5 p.m. Wednesday, in the area of Shippensburg and Baltimore roads in Southampton Township.
