EASTHAMPTON — It didn’t take long for the Easthampton baseball team’s bats to get rolling, as the Eagles put up 10 runs across the first two innings against Amherst on Monday afternoon at Nonotuck Park.
Easthampton is starting to play its best baseball at the right time with the postseason approaching, and Monday marked its third consecutive win — a 17-6 victory over the ‘Canes in five innings.
Easthampton (5-11) was No. 27 in Division 5 in the recent MIAA Power Rankings, and it needs a strong end to the season to keep its playoff hopes alive.
“This situation is exactly what I was expecting and what I was hoping,” Easthampton head coach Ed Zuchowski said. “We’re getting things moving in the right direction toward the end of the season. Looking ahead to the postseason, whether we make the tournament or not, the reality is you want to be hot late in the season. I feel like we got that with two games to go right now. I’m happy with the way the boys have responded over the last couple of weeks.”
Amherst fought back with two runs in the fourth, but Easthampton responded with seven more in the bottom half of the frame. The ‘Canes scored fifth in the top of the fifth, but it was too little, too late. Head coach Jeff Gladu saw promising signs from his team late in the game, but it didn’t sustain it for long enough against a surging Eagles team.
“We did great in the last inning,” Gladu said. “I emptied the bench and got some guys in the game in a meaningful game, and they kept the rally going. You’re not going to see us lay down. Some scores have been ugly this season, but these guys never quit.”
Jason Sigda walked twice, scored two runs and tallied an RBI, Pat Larson knocked a base hit, scored twice and drove in a pair, Christian D’Onfrio crossed the plate three times and had an RBI and Bailey Davis had a hit, an RBI and scored for Easthampton.
The Eagles’ defense was sharp, and it helped that Hunter Montalvo-Greene pitched four strong innings — surrendering just three hits and one earned run. The freshman added six strikeouts and has improved each time he steps on the mound.

“I know from his junior varsity years, he does get better as the season goes on,” Zuchowski said of Montalvo-Greene. “It’s held true this year. He’s a gamer.”
Nate Ziomak ripped an three-run triple as part of the four-run fifth for Amherst to highlight the ‘Canes attack. Brady Klaes came on in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings of solid work, striking out three and not giving up a run.
“I’m proud of these kids every day,” Gladu said. “I don’t care what the score is at the end of the game, it’s ‘Did my guys compete today?’ Today they did. We were aggressive, and that’s all you can ask for.”
