A wreath has been placed at the statue of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty in Killarney to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, when, after years of devastation, oppression and loss, peace was eventually declared across the continent.

The Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald, who officiated at the ceremony, said the wreath, laid in silence, symbolises not only remembrance but a commitment to peace.

Mayor Fitzgerald takes a moment for reflection at the statue

“It honours the dead, acknowledges the horrors of war and reaffirms our dedication to ensuring that such suffering is never repeated.,” he said.

“We lay the wreath with respect for all who endured, with compassion for the generations shaped by the consequences of war and with hope for a future rooted in unity and understanding”.

The mayor acknowledged the proposal for the wreath laying that was made by Cllr Marie Moloney at the April meeting of Kerry County Council.
