Did Gerrard make a mistake by snubbing Rangers? Premier League hero senses regret incoming if one thing goes wrong
Don Hutchison believes Gerrard should have been the man given the reins at Ibrox
There might just be regret on both sides over Steven Gerrard's decision to snub a Rangers return – especially if the Russell Martin appointment goes wrong.
That's the view of former Scotland and Everton star Don Hutchison who reckons the 'Invincible' boss would have been the perfect fit.
Gerrard, out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq, was one of the early frontrunners for the Ibrox job but decided against it with his family not ready to up sticks from their lavish lifestyle in Bahrain for a return to Glasgow.
He led the club to the league title in 2021 – their sole triumph since their journey back up through the leagues and the only blemish on Celtic in the last 15 years – but the timing wasn't right for him to lead the new era at Ibrox.
Instead the new Rangers owners landed on former Southampton boss Martin, who has been met with a mixed reception from fans.
Martin was sacked by Saints in December after his uncompromising style failed to translate to the Premier League but is confident he will be able to deliver success at Ibrox.
But Hutchison believes Gerrard might just be the man they should have appointed.
He was asked by Gambling Zone if Gerrard made a 'mistake' by not returning, and said: "I'm not sure how the interview process went. I thought it'd be a brilliant fit. I mean, he's Invincible up there, by the way. He won the league with them and got them to be invincible. I think you would have loved going back to Stevie.
"Russell Martin, I think, that will be very interesting to see how he gets on because he’s a guy that's very steadfast in the way he wants to play.
"If they perform like his Southampton team performed and there is no change - and that was the criticism that I and many other pundits labelled Russell Martin - that he wasn't willing to adapt and kept making the same mistakes, Rangers fans are not going to accept that.
"I thought Stevie would be a perfect fit. I like Stevie. I think he's definitely got a way back into management and Rangers, in my opinion. I think he suits them, and they suit him."
