Update:

Chick-fil-A has found itself in the crosshairs of those who hate paper cups with a debate erupting on Reddit after people noticed in some places that the popular chicken sandwich chain is no longer using Styrofoam cups.

Netizens have been expressing their views on a chat group titled ‘I’m fine with the fries change, but taking away the styrofoam cup? This feels gross.’ While some concurred with the disgust of having to hold a “sweaty” cup in which the ice melts too fast, others took a more nuanced view of the change.

“I understand if it’s better for the environment. I just reeaaallly wish we could find a similar alternative, because styrofoam really does keep that ice from melting nearly as fast,” one user pleaded.

“Honestly, this is one hill I really don’t care to die on. If it bothers you so much, you can always keep a Yeti mug in your car and transfer your drink to that,” another user recommended. They even suggested that Chick-fil-A could “make some extra money” if they wanted by releasing reusable, insulated travel cups and allow people to use those instead.

But many pointed out that nobody should be taking their anger out on Chick-fil-A, as they are just following state and local regulations on the permitted use of Styrofoam food packaging. They advised those who don’t like the change to take it up with their elected lawmakers.

Where is Styrofoam use prohibited?

The following states and the District of Columbia are already enforcing restrictions on the use of styrofoam in the whole of their territory: California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

There are local restrictions on the use of styrofoam in ten states including Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

More legislation is pending not only at the state and local levels but also a bill has been introduced on Capitol Hill.
